You’re invited to celebrate National Public Lands Day with the Trust on Saturday, September 30th!
Public Lands Day is a time for us to come together to enjoy the great outdoors and celebrate the lands that give us so much. We’re looking for volunteers to help your park by gathering seeds of native plants for restoration projects in the Park. Seeds of native plants are needed to re-vegetate areas cleared of invasive weeds or disturbed by facility maintenance. Many of the species appropriate for use in the Park aren’t currently available from seed dealers. It’s also NPS policy to use seed collected from as close to the restoration site as possible. So, we’ll be collecting various species near several projects currently underway.
What: Native Seed Collecting
When: Saturday, September 30 from 10am-1pm
Where: Meet in front of Skyland Resort (the upper portion of the parking lot near the Dining Hall). We will then carpool to a few close locations.
How to prepare: Dress appropriately for the weather–and remember that it’s often 10 degrees cooler in the Park. Layers are advised, as are a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and drinking water. Please bring a packed lunch. In honor of National Public Lands Day admission to Shenandoah National Park is free on September 30.
