Renowned filmmaker Ken Burns celebrated our national parks with his stunning series, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Did you know that Shenandoah was Ken’s first national park experience?
At an event the Trust co-hosted with WVPT a while back, Ken recounted his challenging childhood, when his mother was gravely ill and his relationship with his father was strained. He shared a memory of his father waking him up quite early one weekend morning, putting him in the car, and driving to Shenandoah National Park, where they took a quiet hike together—one of the only father-son activities from his youth. “You always remember whose hand you held in your first national park,” he said.
In honor of that experience and in support of the Shenandoah National Park Trust, Ken has recorded a PSA for us, which we share with you here.
