Join us on Saturday, March 16 for a moderate 8.4 mile out-and-back hike to Bear Church Rock on Jones Mountain in the park’s Central District.
Bear Church Rock is a hidden gem. The hike starts along the beautiful Rapidan River and heads up alongside the Staunton River. As we approach the top, we will take a short side trip to Jones Mountain Cabin before making the steep climb to the panoramic outcroppings of Bear Church Rock.
We will meet at the trailhead at 9 am and should wrap up about 2 pm. The trailhead is in Wolftown. Follow US 29 about 3 miles south of Madison. Head West on VA-230 toward Stanardsville and go about 3.6 miles to Wolftown. At Wolftown, turn right on Rt. 662 (Graves Mill Rd.) and go about 5.4 miles to the end (you’ll be bearing right). The road ends at a Shenandoah National Park parking area on the Rapidan River.
Melanie Perl will be our guide. Melanie has been hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond for over 20 years and has been a volunteer in Shenandoah National Park for over 10 years. Space is limited. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 434-293-2728 by March 9, 2013. Let us know if you are interested in carpooling.
