We are pleased to report that a new Superintendent of Shenandoah National Park has been selected. Jim Northup will take the helm, succeeding Martha Bogle, who retired in December. Jim has served as Superintendent of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and various positions in Great Smoky Mountains, Grand Teton, Big Bend and Grand Canyon National Parks, Cape Hatteras and Fire Island National Seashores, and Buffalo National River. A 32 year-veteran of the National Park Service, his first seasonal ranger position was at Shenandoah National Park in 1979.
During his tenure at Pictured Rocks, Jim launched the park’s Community Partner Program, its Adopt-a-Trail/Adopt-a-Campsite Program, Discover Your Lakeshore Program and several initiatives with the park’s gateway communities. He also played a key role in establishing the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation, a sister group to Shenandoah National Park Trust.
In addition to Shenandoah, Jim will serve as Superintendent of Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park in Middletown, Virginia.
We look forward to partnering with Jim to protect, preserve and enhance Shenandoah National Park.
