Visitor Spotlight- Gabriel Mapel

What had you accomplished by the time you were 11? “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on the violin? Long division?

By the time Gabriel Mapel was 11, he was a published author and an award-winning photographer. And a whole lot more. This talented, charming young man from New Hope, Virginia wrote Oh No, Getrude— the true story a black bear “who got into trouble because of naughty people–” when he was 10 years old. A year later, Gabriel won first place in Shenandoah National Park Trust’s Views of Shenandoah photography contest, age 6-12 category.

Gabriel is enamored by the natural world. He started exploring Shenandoah National Park with his family when he was 7 and lists hiking, watching wildlife and taking photos among his favorite activities. He’s an avid birder with a special fondness for peregrine falcons and warblers. We are happy to know that young people like Gabriel are out there in the world.
